Consumer tip: Be careful of smart toys - Marin Independent Journal

With the holidays now well behind us, have you had time to look at any internet-connected video games and virtual reality toys that were received as gifts? You may be surprised to learn that your personal data may be at risk. These “smart toys” may collect data through sensors, photos and audio recordings.

It is crucial to familiarize yourself with any available controls and default settings. Make sure you know where any collected info is stored, as well as how it will be shared and who has access to it. Find out how to review and permanently delete any recordings.

If your child is under 13 years old, the company is required by federal law (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act), to inform you of its privacy practices, ask for your parental consent and protect and secure collected data. Check on the product by going online and searching its name, coupled with words such as “complaint,” “privacy,” or “security.”
