Although other toy makers and retailers suffered over the holidays, Hasbro(NASDAQ:HAS) scored, backed up by toy licenses for Disney-themed movies.
Soaring sales
Hasbro's 2019 fourth quarter, which included the 2019 holiday season, saw a 3% increase in revenue year over year, bringing the total to $143 billion, including $13 million in unfavorable foreign exchange.
A major portion of the sales came from the company's Partner brands division, which produces entertainment-based products. Revenue increased almost 50% to $408.5 million for the quarter. CFO Deborah Thomas said "Our teams worked extremely hard and executed at a high level this holiday, driving fourth quarter and full-year revenue and profit growth while also diversifying our supply chain and preparing to close a major acquisition."
The acquisition she mentioned is eOne, which didn't go through until the first quarter of 2020, but the preparation for the deal impacted financials in the 2019 fourth quarter.
Disney license pays off
Hasbro got the license to produce Disney-themed toys in 2015 after the entertainment king pulled its licenses from Hasbro rival Mattel, with whom it had worked since 1955. "Disney Princess was probably the greatest coup that Hasbro has had in the last three decades," Gene Del Vecchio, an ad exec, told Bloomberg at that time. Four years later it's even more clear.
Mattel has been struggling, seeing declining sales over the holiday. Hasbro saw a turnaround after its own struggles nearly caused a buyout by Mattel in 1996. Then it got into movies, starting with Transformers, and has since come out as the top toy U.S. maker.
Each year, the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program helps millions of less fortunate children across our great nation. In previous years, over 1,600 less fortunate children in Mendocino County were assisted annually with new, unwrapped toys at Christmas by dedicated volunteers. The Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program completed its 72nd National Campaign on Dec. 25 and, unfortunately, the individual who was the volunteer campaign coordinator will not return to coordinate a campaign in 2020. There will not be a Toys for Tots campaign in Mendocino County this coming Christmas unless we get your assistance.
Throughout the next several months, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is accepting applications to be a volunteer campaign coordinator. If you want to join our team of dedicated and passionate volunteers, who take so much pride assisting families in local communities across America during the 2020 Christmas season, complete an application at https://www.toysfortots.org/coordinators-corner/application-start.aspx.
As many of you know, the Marine Corps has deep roots in California. Camp Pendleton, Twentynine Palms, Miramar, and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego are in your great State. Without your help, less fortunate families in Mendocino County will not be assisted by the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program next Christmas.
In over 800 communities across our nation, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands, millions of less fortunate children, through the gift of a new toy, will experience the joy of Christmas and receive a message of hope during the Christmas season. The thousands of Marines and volunteers supporting these campaigns will continue our mission of assisting our nation’s greatest resource, its children.
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity which was created at the behest of the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program began in 1947 in Los Angeles, and since its first National Campaign in 1948 has distributed more than 566 million toys to 258 million children.

The company also detailed the impact that costs and financial benefits related to the acquisition of Entertainment One at the end of 2019 had on its latest results.
Toy giant Hasbro on Tuesday reported lower, but better-than-expected earnings for its fourth quarter ended Dec. 30 as Frozen 2 and Star Wars toys boosted revenue.
Its $3.8 billion acquisition of Entertainment One (eOne) on Dec. 30 meant the latest quarterly results didn't include financial results from the Canadian studio, but Hasbro said they were "impacted by eOne acquisition financing, foreign exchange hedges and other activities."
Among them were $17.8 million in eOne acquisition-related costs for the fourth quarter, $1.4 million in deal-related tax benefits, $139.7 million in foreign exchange hedge gains for the quarter and $20.6 million in financing transaction fees.
Earnings for the fourth quarter reached $267.3 million, or $2.01 per share, compared with $8.8 million, or 7 cents a share in the same period of 2018. "The incremental interest expense and additional shares issued to finance the eOne acquisition impacted fourth quarter 2019 by 9 cents" a share, the firm said. Adjusted earnings for the quarter amounted to $164.8 million, or $1.24 per share, excluding a benefit of $102.5 million, or 77 cents per share, "primarily relating to foreign currency gains as a result of hedging part of the British pound purchase price of eOne and other eOne acquisition costs." That was slightly down from the year-ago adjusted earnings of $169.6 million, or $1.33 per share.
Fourth-quarter revenue increased 3 percent to $1.43 billion, "bolstered by strong demand for Hasbro’s products for Disney’s Frozen 2 and Star Wars," which more than offset "an unfavorable $13.0 million impact from foreign exchange."
Said Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner: "Our acquisition of Entertainment One accelerates our Brand Blueprint strategy and significantly expands our expertise and capabilities as a global play and entertainment company. Our teams are actively engaged to unlock value across our organization – in gaming, in toys, in consumer products and in entertainment."
Similar to Batman’s lair in its “natural grotto,” Batcave Comics & Toys sits underground on an everyday street in Santa Rosa’s Railroad Square.
A trove of vintage toys and comic books, the store attracts locals, regulars, and even foreign collectors.
“We’re one of the largest vintage toy and comic stores in Northern California. We focus on the collectibles, the hard to come by, the rare, the unique. Stuff that’ll bring you back to your childhood,” said Mike Holbrook, Batcave owner.
Batcave Comics & Toys is a hub for comic and toy collectors in the Bay Area, and it has a unique, growing collection that attracts comic fans young and old.
One display Holbrook is most proud of are six action figures of characters from the 1984 sci-fi cult classic film “The Last Starfighter.” The rare toys are Galoob prototypes made the same year the film was released, and never ended up going into production after the company was bought out by Hasbro.
“The Last Starfighter” prototypes were thought to be lost forever. Holbrook spent eight years trying to track them down, and the action figures are featured in the book “Toys that Time Forgot, Volume II” by Blake Wright.
“This is the only place in the world that people can see them,” Holbrook said.
The store has a Disney section, toys tailored especially for girls, D.C. comics toys, about 70 feet of vintage comics, G.I. Joes, original Star Wars toys and Transformers. The store also sells metal bookmarks and boasts original artwork and prints from four local artists.
There’s even a life-sized R2-D2 near the registers that lights up and beeps.
Toy photography has gotten more popular, and some customers come in looking for unique toys to photograph. Recently, a customer bought a bunch of Lord of the Rings toys to decorate their garden.
“We try to have a little bit of everything for the collecting community,” said Holbrook, who has a couple of Batman symbols tattooed on his arm.
The store features a comic book that with Batcave schematics, promising to expose 1,000 secrets of the Batcave and showing the natural grotto under an old disguised barn on the cover. It’s displayed in a glass case. The price tag reads $450.
Holbrook initially became interested in comic books as a latchkey kid who grew up poor.
“I didn’t have a lot of stuff and then when I got older and was able to start purchasing it, I kind of wanted everything that I couldn’t have,” he said. “So I ended up with so much stuff I ended up opening the store.”
On the first Saturday of every month, Batcave hosts “Free Comix Day.” Customers can pick four free comics to take home out of large $1 bins near the stair entrance. There’s also a raffle and prizes. The store’s monthly giveaway is separate from the national free comic book day.
“We definitely like taking care of our locals,” Holbrook said. For adults and kids alike, comics “help promote literacy and imagination.”
“In this day of tablets and everything, kids don’t have that anymore. Comic books are one of the few ways that adults connect with their kids in a relatable way,” Holbrook said.

The Marine Corps League of Surry County, Detachment #1322, recently presented Kevin Powell’s Foothill Ford the Toys for Tots Plaque as the winner of the 2019 Fill the Truck Challenge.
There are three dealerships that participated in 2019 Toys for Tots Campaign Season: Mount Airy Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat, Mount Airy Toyota, and Kevin Powell’s Foothills Ford. Each of the past six years, the dealerships in Mount Airy have helped the Toys for Tots Campaign Season collect toys for the less fortunate children in the area.
“We had a great time this year filling the truck for the annual Fill the Truck Challenge,” said Isreal Williams of Foothills Ford. “It’s a great thing to do. We truly enjoy it and are thankful for being involved for our third year and our second win. It seems our theme is someone getting the Toys for Tots logo tattoo.
This year, our newest salesperson, Josh Johnson, agreed after I convinced him it was for a good cause. Shelley, owner of Stainless Studios in Mount Airy, not only donates the tattoo work for us, but plays a big part of getting toys donated to fill the truck. She helped a ton this year and we are very grateful to her for that. We’re also grateful to KSN Liquidations in Sparta, for their donations. They were more than happy to help when they got wind of an employee willing to get a tattoo for the cause.
”Honestly, at the end of the day, it’s great to win the challenge, but win or lose, it’s about the kids that’s the true driving force. We look forward to next year’s challenge.”
Foothill Ford collected 303 toys during the 2019 Toys for Tots Campaign Season. Their Facebook posts keep people engaged about the challenge and donations of toys that Foothill Ford collect help the Surry County Toys for Tots campaign fulfill the wishes of the less fortunate children in the area.
All totaled, the effort led to 8,238 toys being distributed to 1,309 children.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Latest on the Westminster Kennel Club dog show (all times local):
12:55 p.m.
Tiny dogs are having their day at the Westminster Kennel Club show.
Pomeranians, papillons and other toy dogs are in the rings Monday, as are terriers and the diverse category of dogs known as “non-sporting” breeds.
They range from Dalmatians, bulldogs and poodles to less familiar breeds such as the löwchen, Norwegian lundehund and Xoloitzcuintli -- that’s "shoh-loh-eetz-KWEENT’-lee," a hairless breed from Mexico.
Backstretch the bulldog took in the scene as she waited to compete. Just 12 weeks after having a litter of puppies, she was back in competitive shape and ready to show off with owner and handler Valery Scrimo of Saratoga Springs, New York.
Daytime judging chooses the best dog in each breed. Those winners begin facing off Monday night at Madison Square Garden, where best in show will be named Tuesday night.

What makes a championship obedience dog? The Westminster Kennel Club knows it by Heart.
A Labrador retriever named Heart won Westminster’s obedience contest Sunday, extending her sweep of the five-year-old competition.
With that, handler Linda Brennan says they don’t plan to enter the contest next year.
“I think it’s only fair” to step aside, said Brennan, an obedience trainer from Columbia, New Jersey.
The competition requires dogs to sit, stay, retrieve a toy on command and stick by their handlers’ sides while walking around other people, among other skills. Finalists used to do complex six-minute routines of their own devising, but Westminster changed things up this year to align more closely with other obedience trials.
Heart, age 7, executed the maneuvers with her tail wagging.
“She loves this environment — she really does. She finds it very exciting and very stimulating,” Brennan said.
Don’t lose heart, owners of everyday dogs: Even Heart misbehaves from time to time outside the ring.
“She has her little naughty habits,” Brennan said with a smile.
Toymaker MGA Entertainment is warning that the outbreak has already significantly disrupted production of its brands in China, including its global toy hit LOL Surprise. That will delay production and shipments of the company's toys, which typically are made now for the fall and holiday shopping seasons.
This means LOL Suprise toys could be hard to find by the end of 2020.
"It's a big mess and very frustrating," said Isaac Larian, founder and CEO of the family-owned Los Angeles-based company.
Larian said factories in China typically close for the three or so weeks of Lunar New Year and start up production lines again in early February. Many of the migrant workers return to their homes during that time.
But this year the Chinese government extended the annual holiday, keeping factories closed and workers at home longer in an effort to curb the spread of the virus.
"All toy companies begin production for fall products right after the Chinese New Year. These are toys for Christmas," Larian said. "We have now already lost at least three weeks in our production cycle. I just got a call that some of our factories may not open until March."
"You can't extend Christmas. It's always on December 25," he added. "So, yes, the availability of our goods in a timely manner will be severely affected."
More than 80% of MGA's toys are made in China, including LOL Surprise. The company contracts with 50 factories in China, which accounts for more than 80% of all global toy production.
Larian said the LOL Surprise brand, launched in 2016, now accounts for 45% of the company's total global revenue. The brand, which includes, accessories and licensed products, brought in $3.5 billion in total global retail sales for the toys alone last year, he said.
"The reality for us is that a two-month delay in production for LOL is pretty significant," said Larian.
"We now have to manage how we reallocate the supply of our toys not just to customers in the United States but worldwide," he said.

Pixar notched its 10th animated feature Oscar win on Sunday as “Toy Story 4" took home the gold statue. Surprisingly, considering the box-office success of animated sequels, no franchise had ever collected more than one animated feature Oscar until “Toy Story 4" added to the previous installment’s Oscar in the category.
Producer Mark Nielsen said, “We want to thank the moviegoing audience so much, especially those who grew up with ‘Toy Story.’ We hope that your adventures with Woody and Buzz made growing up a little easier.”
“Toy Story 4" also is nominated for Randy Newman’s song, “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away.” Previously, “Toy Story 3" had also been nominated for best picture and adapted screenplay (and won for animated feature).
Producer Jonas Rivera said, “We take great pride in the fact that we get to make family films. ‘Toy Story 4' is a love letter to our families.”

Director Josh Cooley said, “We are so, so grateful for this honor ... we just want to thank the academy for honoring our film next to so may beautiful animated films this year. we’re just proud to be among them.”
Although the third installment had seemed to beautifully wrap up the story of the secret lives of toys led by cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Pixar opted for a fourth film, nine years later. “Toy Story 4" answered questions left open, such as whatever happened to Woody’s love, Bo Peep (voiced by Annie Potts). It introduced some new toy characters, including depressed Evel Kneivel-style stuntman Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves) and adorably neurotic trash refugee Forky (Tony Hale).
New director and co-writer Josh Cooley had grown up with the franchise and felt the burden of following up “Toy Story 3.” He told The Times in December, “I know the joy and the sense of excitement I got, going to those movies in the theater. All that joy I felt as an audience member, I wanted to bring into this film. It needed to continue that legacy and that joy. I had a lot of sleepless nights.”

Co-writer Stephany Folsom told The Times then, “I grew up on these movies, ‘Toy Story’ was one of my formative movies, growing up. That’s one of the reasons I got into this business, to tell those kinds of stories.
“[‘Toy Story 3' writer] Michael Arndt was at the studio when I first got hired, and I said to him, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to live up to what you did,’ and he said, ‘Ehh, you’ll be fine,’ ” Folsom says.
The movie opened to $118 million domestically, which was then the fourth-highest animated opening ever, yet that was widely reported as a “disappointment.” It was cited as an example of so-called “franchise fatigue” as some unwanted and disliked sequels underperformed at the 2019 box office. However, “Toy Story 4" went on to gross more than $1 billion. And despite some letdown talk in early reviews, the film ended up with a 97% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.
“There were waves of responses,” says Cooley. “Before it came out, it was, ‘Why are you making this movie?’ As people saw it, the questions changed, the responses became, ‘I really enjoyed it.’ I was in Mexico after a press screening and people were crying as they’re asking me the questions.
“I was walking through the park with my dog, and I saw some kids at a picnic table, and they were making their own Forkys!”
In its brief history, Pixar has now won 16 Oscars overall, including its 10th in the animated feature category.

"Toy Story 4" took home the Academy Award for best animated feature on Sunday, marking the 13th time the big prize has gone to a Disney film.
"Toy Story" was one of three front runners headed into Oscar weekend alongside "Missing Link," which won the Golden Globe in January, and "Klaus," which took home the BAFTA for best animated feature film last week.
It is the second film in the "Toy Story" franchise to win the best animated feature trophy. "Toy Story 3" won in 2011.
"Toy Story 4″ picks up not long after the end of "Toy Story 3," where a college-aged Andy gifted his toys to a little girl named Bonnie. Early in the film, Bonnie crafts together Forky, a plastic spork with googly eyes, broken Popsicle sticks for legs, a clay mouth and a twisted pipe cleaner for arms. He is now her favorite toy and Buzz Lightyear, Woody and the gang have to convince Forky, who staunchly believes he is not a toy, to stay all while on an RV trip.
Since the best animated feature category was established in 2001 — the first award was given out in 2002 — Disney has won the award 13 times with films from Disney Animation and Pixar.
During its run in theaters "Toy Story 4" garnered $1.07 billion worldwide, $434 million of which was taken in domestically.
CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Cumberland County Animal Control is hosting a pet toy drive for dogs and cats in its shelter.
Animal Control will collect donations like rubber dog toys, rope toys and cat toys between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. until Feb. 11.
On Valentine's Day, dogs will be able to choose their own toy from a pile of the donated items. Cats will be randomly given an item appropriate for their age and size.
"It's very important for a shelter dog to have a toy to pass the time and keep their minds stimulated," Animal Control Director Elaine Smith said in a written statement. "The less stressed out they are, the more likely they are to be adopted into a loving forever home."
Monetary donations will also be accepted online. Any excess toys will go to future shelter animals.

Mattel has closed two of 13 factories it had operated world-wide, and it plans to close or sell two more, including a Montreal plant that makes Mega Bloks.
MattelInc.MAT -1.61% said it has closed two factories in Asia and plans to close one in Canada, as it reduces its sprawling manufacturing footprint to cut costs.
The maker of Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels cars shut manufacturing sites in China and Indonesia last year, and it said it would close a facility in Montreal sometime this year. Mattel had previously announced plans to close and sell a factory in Mexico.
Closing the Montreal plant, which makes Mega Bloks, will affect about 580 workers, a spokeswoman said. She declined to say how many jobs were affected by the Asia closures. Mattel employs about 35,000 workers during peak manufacturing periods.
The manufacturing overhaul is part of Chief Executive Ynon Kreiz’s plan to turn around and stabilize Mattel, one of the world’s largest toy companies, which has struggled in recent years, from both weak sales in large divisions like Fisher-Price preschool toys and American Girl dolls and the industry upheaval caused by the liquidation of Toys “R” Us.
Weak sales have exposed inefficiencies in Mattel’s manufacturing network and led to some factories being underutilized. Mattel has sought to tackle various problems in the supply chain, from drastically reducing the number of products it makes to culling the number of colors available to designers.
Roberto Isais, Mattel’s chief supply chain officer, said the changes have turned its supply chain into a competitive advantage. “We are continuing to optimize our manufacturing footprint, increase the productivity of our manufacturing infrastructure and achieve efficiencies across our global supply chain,” he said.
Mattel plans to retain some factories, like those that make Hot Wheels and Barbie, where the company would have an advantage over outsourcing to a third party. Executives say such a structure would allow Mattel to move more quickly to capitalize faster on trends.
The China factory made finished goods, while the Indonesia plant made tooling equipment used in other factories. The manufacturing will be moved to other Mattel facilities.
Mattel and Hasbro are scheduled this week to report earnings for the key holiday shopping period.
Already, there have been signs of caution. Research firm NPD Group Inc. said U.S. toy sales fell in the fourth quarter, which had six fewer shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, leading to a 4% decline for the industry for 2019.
TargetCorp. blamed soft toy sales for its weaker-than-expected holiday season. Other toy companies, like Spin MasterCorp. and FunkoInc., have warned of a weak holiday period.
Some toy companies have expressed concerns that the coronavirus outbreak in China could disrupt the toy supply chain. Isaac Larian, CEO of MGA Entertainment Inc., a Mattel competitor and maker of L.O.L. Dolls and other toys, said a large Chinese toy factory is remaining closed for another week.
“The coronavirus is not solely China’s problem,” Mr. Larian said. “It will impact the global economy.”
