Duncan looks to step back from Toys - Cookeville Herald Citizen

BY KATE COOK

Freddy Duncan has been the toy man for about 10 years now. Even though it's been a very fulfilling gig, he'd like to step back and take it easy for a while.

Duncan is the owner of Freddy Duncan and Sons Moving and Storage. Ten years ago, he thought helping kids have a nice Christmas would be a good way to give back to the community. So he joined Toys for Tots. Nationally, Toys For Tots is run each year by the Marine Corps Reserve.

Toys for Tots was created 72 years ago by reservist Major Bill Hendricks. Every year, the Putnam County arm of Toys for Tots provides Christmas toys and everyday living essentials to 2,000 children in the community.

Duncan's first year of volunteering with Upper Cumberland Toys for Tots he worked with some folks who were already involved. The next year, life changes meant Duncan became the toy guy, he said.

Four years ago, Life Church began a toy drive program, Duncan said. Three years ago, the two groups teamed up under the Upper Cumberland Toys for Tots umbrella. Now they've really got the process streamlined.

Duncan said he works on organizing, including meeting with business owners and civic groups to set up drives. Life Church works drives, takes donations, handles registration and sets up the annual "toy store."

Duncan said this year, nearly 700 families in need registered and "shopped" for their children at the toy store.

"It's great, but I'm looking to step back a little," Duncan said.

Toys for Tots uses Duncan's trucks and warehouses, and he still plans on making that happen, he said.
